How Swivel Stools Work
Cymax’s swivel stools can be traced back to Thomas Jefferson, who invented the swivel chair in 1776. Rumor has it that he drafted the US Declaration of Independence on his creation, which he built by connecting the top and bottom pieces of a chair with an iron spindle.
Of course, the technology has advanced since then. The mechanism on a contemporary swivel stool consists of two equally sized plates – one connected to the underside of the seat, the other to where it meets the legs – that are separated by a sturdy plastic race and lubricated ball bearings, which allow the plates to spin against one another. The size and construct of the devices vary with the weight they need to bear – but rest assured, Cymax’s range of swivel bar stools have been put to the test thousands of spins over.
Why swivel?
Swivel stools are more comfortable, especially where the stool has a chair back or back rest. Most stools come with some sort of swivel function, entering a stool that doesn’t swivel can be awkward.
Swivel stools do pose another problem, with regards to the stools with backs. If a stool is swivelled with enough force, damage can be caused to the back of the stool. To avoid this remember to install your stools far enough from your bar to allow for either the memory swivel to stop the back from contacting the bar, or for there to be enough clearance to insure this never happens.
