When you are shopping for Leather Barstools it is important to consider that there are different kinds of leather. Although these grades determine the value of the leather, and rank the leather for quality, every type of leather has its own benefits.

Leather Grades:

  • Full Grain: Full Grain signifies the highest quality leather, it is also the softest and the most durable. Naturally, this kind of leather will have imperfections, it’s normal. If you are looking for a premium leather stool, look for Full Grain.

  • Top Grain: Despite its name, top grain is not the top of its class. Top grain is however it is still as durable as Full Grain. Top grain implies that the “grain” on the leather is embossed or artificially stamped to the surface of the leather, this makes for fewer "imperfections" and for many people, this type of leather is more desirable than Full Grain. It might have a slight plastic feel to it, because the grain has been sanded away, it also does much better with drink spills than Full Grain. Top Grain also implies that the leather has been split, top grain is one product that comes from this splitting.

  • Split Grain: Split grain is also called "Genuine Leather" by a lot of companies. When Top Grain is split, several layers of split grain are left over. This split layer can then be split in some cases a few more times to make quality leather stools.

  • Bonded Leather: This is the cheapest, or least expensive kind of leather, the reason being is that leather scraps are chemically bonded to each other to form larger leather pieces. Sometimes this is like patchwork, other times it is seamless. Bonded means chemically bonded.

  • Faux Leather: Faux Leather isn’t leather at all, but it might look like leather depending on the manufacturer. Faux is the French word for fake. The stool is real, but the leather is an imitation. Leatherette is a type of faux leather. Vinyl is also faux leather. Many restaurants are looking for Vinyl barstools for their stain resistance compared to real leather.
